About Us

Located in Gastonia, North Carolina, Southwest Middle School is a proud part of Gaston County Schools. Under the leadership of Principal Dr. Kathleen D'Avria, the school serves students in grades 6 through 8, fostering a supportive and innovative learning environment.

As one of Gaston County's designated Innovation Schools for the 2025–2026 academic year, Southwest Middle is committed to transforming education through creative programs and collaborative teaching strategies. This initiative empowers educators and engages students in meaningful ways to enhance academic achievement and personal growth. 

The school's mission is to support the diverse needs of its students, helping them recognize and achieve their full potential. Southwest Middle offers a range of extracurricular activities, including Math Elite, Battle of the Books, robotics, band, chorus, and Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes, providing students with opportunities to develop real-world skills and explore their interests.
